Gold Coast severe thunderstorm: Hailstones fall in southern suburbs

A severe thunderstorm brought hail and high winds to parts of the Gold Coast today after a sweltering hot day in the city.

HAILSTONES have fallen in southern suburbs after a severe storm passed over the Gold Coast this afternoon.

Hailstones as large as 2cm fell in suburbs including Burleigh Heads, Bonogin and Tallebudgera Valley as the short but violent storm passed through.

The storm followed a sweltering hot day on the Gold Coast.

Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said more storms could be expected on the Gold Coast in coming days.

“There’s severe bands of storms … from Gympie down to the border due to a low pressure trough,” she said.

“There’s an area of instability contributing to the heat, there’s a constant air mass and it will stay for a few days.

“It might be one of those take along an umbrella weeks.”

Storms are expected to hit the Gold Coast again by tomorrow afternoon, with showers interspersed during the week.
