WAGYU steaks, sirloin and rib eye — a prestigious Gold Coast restaurant is selling $20,000 worth of quality beef and customers are getting a cut of the action.

Moo Moo Grill and Wine Bar in Broadbeach is hoping to move the excess quantity of meat after expected trade never eventuated and coronavirus restrictions forced the restaurant to close as of yesterday.

Moo Moo managing director Steven Adams said the steaks are a cross-section of the restaurant’s menu and are selling for reasonable prices.

“The pharmacy convention (at the Gold Coast Convention Centre nearby) was due to happen last week, that was cancelled,” he said.

LAST DRINKS AS BARS, RESTAURANTS BRACE FOR CHANGES

“We had stocked up for that. So with the shut down the beef can’t sit there forever, and we were getting calls anyways from people asking if they could buy some beef.

“And the supermarket is a little bit scarce, we might as well sell it. We’ve priced it to move. We’re not losing money on it but we’re not taking a great deal either.”

With new limits on hospitality operations in place to curb the threat of coronavirus, Mr Adams said his restaurant didn’t consider moving to takeaway only.

“We’re not going to bother with that. We don’t see it as viable,” he said.

“It’s cheaper and better to shut the doors, until such times ease. Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later.”

Mr Adams said most stock is likely to sell out today however the sale could continue tomorrow.

“There’s been a good reaction so far. We do have some dry ageing that’s still hanging so in a few weeks time, we’ll probably be offering that as well.”
