THE Gold Coast’s national rugby league team was the Seagulls but the Glitter Strip always had a special place in its hearts for the Brisbane Broncos.

The rugby superstars were on top of the world after winning the club’s inaugural grand final against St George.

Hundreds of changing and screaming fans, including some from the Gold Coast, crowded into Brisbane’s airport for the team’s return after “thrashing” St George 28-8 in the grand final, which was held in Sydney.

For more than an hour before the flight arrived, fans claimed vantage points while wearing team jerseys, waving flags and even a life-size cardboard cut-out of team captain Allan Langer.

Because of the large crowd, security officers shut down the airport’s escalators and it took the players, led by Langer, more than 15 minutes to get through the sea of people to buses which took them to a civic reception.

Langer was reported to have been “chaired shoulder high” on the bus, which was also mobbed by fans, delaying its departure.

Meanwhile in the US, a new book was released accusing Senator Ted Kennedy, brother to slain President John F. Kennedy, of being addicted to sex, drugs and alcohol.

He was alleged to have engaged in orgies with celebrities Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty and Joan Baez.

It was also alleged that Senator Kennedy had an affair with Margaret Trudeau, the ex-wife of former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau.
