‘Nice knowing you’: Aussies shocked by insane price of Subway Footlong

A man has declared they’re no longer going to buy Subway after realising how much a Footlong costs these days.

The going rate of a Subway Footlong has left many Aussies reeling after a fed-up customer recently shared how much he paid on social media.

The Melbourne man posted a photo of his order to Reddit, which came to an astonishing $16.95 — before any extras.

He claimed that he’s now “done” with the sandwich chain moving forward.

“$16.95 for the classic chicken Footlong, and they still have the nerve to charge extra for beetroot,” he wrote.

“See ya, Subway. Nice knowing you.”

The post quickly gained traction, amassing over a thousand likes and more than 300 comments, with many users echoing his sentiment about what they perceive as unjustifiable price hikes in fast food across Australia.

“$17 for a Subway? That’s the price of one bowl of pho or close to two banh mi sandwiches. Absolutely ridiculous pricing,” lamented one user.

“It’s so expensive now,” commented another, while someone else described the price as “ridiculous,” given how “stingy” Subway has become with salads and toppings.

One person shared that they recently walked into a Subway, looked at the prices, and decided to walk back out, stating, “It’s idiotic.”

Another commenter referred to the price as a “hard pass,” with yet another remarking that “sandwiches shouldn’t cost more than $10, if we’re being honest”.

A different commenter noted that while McDonald’s, KFC, and Hungry Jack’s have also raised their prices, at least they offer frequent deals through their apps — something they claim Subway has long neglected.

“If you’re savvy enough, there’s usually some sort of deal or better value available,” they pointed out. “But Subway is one company that almost never has any decent offers or discounts, so I ditched them years ago”.

Another user agreed, saying they only eat fast food if there’s a deal, reminiscing about past promotions Subway used to offer.

“They haven’t had a good deal since the two wraps for $10 promotion about 10 to 15 years ago. Jesus, I’m getting old,” they said.

Others reflected nostalgically on how much a sub used to cost, with one writing, “$7 Sub of the Day was a good deal.”

Another commented, “A sub was $10 just a decade ago.”

However, some argued that the price isn’t entirely terrible, noting that a Footlong can sometimes be stretched across two meals.

They did voice concerns about the declining quality of the ingredients, though.

Yet another user added, “To be fair, it’s still comparatively okay value when lined up against other similar options”.

News.com.au reached out to Subway for comment, but they declined to comment.
