New Aussie supermarket trend taking over Coles, Woolies aisles

Woolworths and Coles have responded to the “growing demand” for a trending item, with the both supermarkets upping its offerings.

Cucumbers are the latest food trend on TikTok

Pistachios are no longer just a humble nut.

The simple snack option has become the “hottest flavour” in recent months, with countless pistachio flavoured products emerging for our developing tastebuds.

From pastries filled with it to loaded chocolate bars and even sandwich spreads – pistachio fever has hit.

To accommodate the soaring demand, Australian supermarkets have begun stocking all-things pistachio flavoured, with Woolworths confirming it is actively upping its offering in response to the booming trend.

“We’ve noticed a real buzz around pistachio lately – it’s popping up in everything from desserts and snacks to savoury dishes,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.

“At Woolworths, we’re always looking to introduce exciting new flavours and products that inspire our customers, and we’re thrilled to be expanding our range to meet this growing demand.”

Is Dubai’s TikTok-viral chocolate worth the hype?

The retail giant jumped on the bandwagon last year with the launch of its Pistachio Cheesecake. It said there was “a huge demand for the product, selling more than 80 per cent of the first batch in the first three weeks”.

It also released an exclusive range of Messina gelato tubs, with the Pistachio Praline variety coming out on top as the most popular flavour of the bunch.

Popular Melbourne foodie, who goes by the handle @AngeEats, said pistachio spread was fast overtaking other cult products as a “favourite”.

“Pistachio spread is rapidly emerging as the market leader in the spread category in Australia, surpassing traditional favourites like Biscoff and Nutella,” he told news.com.au.

“This shift is largely driven by increasing consumer demand for healthier, more natural alternatives to sugary, heavily processed spreads.

“It offers a rich, nutty flavour and is packed with nutrients like healthy fats, antioxidants, and protein, which resonate with health-conscious consumers.”

The influencer also believes the rise in popularity can be attributed to the fact people are becoming more adventurous in their food choices.

“Pistachio spread makes it an attractive option for a wide variety of uses, from toast to desserts,” he said.

“Brands such as Pistachio Papi are making moves in the industry as people are looking for alternatives and they’re always wanting something new and trending to try.”

But while pistachios are a new taste sensation for Aussies, food blogger Nectro Vlangos – best known as @nectoriouspapi on social media – said it is a well-known flavour in a European country.

“Pistachio spreads and creams have been popular in Italy for a long while now, so I am glad that Australia is catching on,” he told news.com.au.

“I think it has become popular thanks to the rise of places like Yo-Chi and açaí outlets where you can get pistachio sauce as a topping option.

“While pistachio wasn’t a flavour people would really gravitate to in the past, it kind of seemed a big daggy, so it’s great to see different varieties popping up in our supermarkets now too.

“It’s just the beginning, I am sure more will be seeing more products hitting shelves.”

Woolies isn’t the only retailer getting in on our obsession with the green-coloured nut.

Coles is also selling several pistachio-flavoured products, including a Pistachio & Vanilla Gelato, a pistachio and almond butter spread and Little Moons Honey Roasted Pistachio Frozen Mochi.

“We have seen a noticeable trend in customers seeking pistachio-flavoured food items and as such we’re working to meet this demand and offer products in this flavour to be enjoyed,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.

“From spreads to health bars and stay tuned, even a sweet treat in the Bakery section that’s coming soon, we’re excited to offer even more variety to our customers who are loving the pistachio flavour in the next few months.”

Krispy Kreme also launched a limited-edition doughnut, a collaboration with Pistachio Papi, that has sold out every day since its launch.

Not everyone is a fan of the new “craze”, with some labelling it “ridiculous” in a recent Reddit thread.

“Have most people in the world been living under a rock and not heard of pistachios before because I keep seeing pistachio flavoured everything right now?” the post read.

Many weighed in on its current popularity, with some arguing it will soon go out of food fashion.

“Food goes through trends, same as fashion. Bacon, avocado toast, salted caramel, quinoa, all food trends,” said one.

“Everything comes and goes in a wave,” another agreed.
