Aldi receipt reveals how to shop on budget

A savvy shopper has revealed how she dishes up six hot meals for less than $35 by buying her ingredients at a budget supermarket.

Melbourne TikToker Olivia Fitzpatrick, who runs The Motivated Millennial, shared her tips in a now-viral clip on the platform last week, drumming up more than 229,000 views and over 14,000 likes.

“Let me show you how cheap Aldi is. This week my partner and I have come dangerously close to running out of money for our budget for our groceries,” the 28-year-old said.

“This week I set the challenge to get three dinners and three lunches for under $35 just by shopping at Aldi and whatever was in our pantry.”

And she pulled it off – purchasing 13 items, ranging from protein and vegetables to pasta and spending just $32, with the most expensive product, a bottle of extra virgin olive oil, coming in at $6.99.

From her haul, Olivia made a beef pasta, chicken stir-fry and chicken tacos for her dinners, taking leftovers and instant noodle cups for her lunches.

In the comments under another clip of the shop, she offered three “hot tips” for people wanting to budget their grocery shop.

“Hot tip 1: pick cheaper veggies to pad out meals,” she advised.

“Hot tip 2: pasta/rice can go a long way and make extras for lunch leftovers!

“Hot tip 3: shop your pantry before going to the supermarket and make meals with what you already have.”

Hundreds of Olivia’s followers took to the comments to thank her for the tips, sharing their own experiences at the German supermarket giant.

“Aldi is so underrated!” one wrote, to which Olivia asked for product recommendations, adding: “Every time I go I’m like I need to start shopping here again!”

“This is where I shop it’s sooo good!” commented another, while one man tagged his partner and said, “We need to start doing this!”

While another said: “Aldi is great for basics but you can’t get everything, therefore I can’t be bothered going to two shops so I stick to Woolies. But it’s breaking the bank lol we don’t even get snacks really just the basics and it’s over $200 for two adults a kid and a baby.”

With inflation on the rise, Commonwealth Bank senior economist Belinda Allen told The Sydney Morning Herald in late April that the bank predicted the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages has risen 1.3 per cent in the March quarter, compared with the 0.7 per cent rise clocked in December.

Ms Allen said the bigger bill at the supermarket checkout was noticeable for most people.

“Because we purchase food so often, it’s the one that sticks out at the moment,” she said.

“Natural disasters in food-growing regions have led to higher food prices, and a rise in raw materials, including for how you store and transport food, are contributing to higher prices as well.”
