Hungry Jack's new range gets Mormon influencer approval
A sugary drink craze that has been popularised by the Mormon wives' reality TV show has landed in Australia in a big way.
A popular fast food chain has put its own spin on a drink that has proved to be a fan-favourite in the Mormon community.
Hungry Jack’s has released a “Jack’d Up Sodas” range, which is essentially soft drink with add ins such as flavoured syrups. It is akin to the so-called “dirty sodas”, which have been popularised thanks to the women in The Secret Lives Of Mormon Wives.
The name of the unique drink was borne from the fact the liquid refreshment is so sugary, many deemed the beverage as “dirty”.
The Hungry Jack range has four items — Dirty Cola, Blue Lagoon, Strawberry Dream and Pineapple Punch — that are available in stores for a limited time.
Fan-favourite Mum-Toker and reality star Mikayla Matthews, who loves any dirty soda as long as it contains sparkling water, tried the Hungry Jack’s range to see if it lived up to the hype.
“You guys know that we’re the experts here in dirty sodas so I’m going to be trying the Strawberry Dream and Blue Lagoon Jack’d Up sodas to see if they get my stamp of approval,” the 25-year-old said.
She started with the Blue Lagoon was made with blue watermelon, fizzy lemonade and creamer. She declared it to be “so good”. Meanwhile the Strawberry Dream featured lemonade, creamer and strawberry flavouring.
“Yeah, this one is my favourite. It tastes exactly like a strawberry and cream popsicle,” she said, giving it her stamp of approval.
Luke Pavan, Hungry Jack’s marketing director, said: “At Hungry Jack’s, delivering great tasting products and innovation are at the heart of everything we do.
“Jack’d Up Sodas rewrite the rules – bold, fun, and unforgettable. They’re set to be the must-try drink of the season.”
Other social media users expressed their excitement.
“Sold me lol. I want to have a party with dirty sodas because of y’all lol,” one person said.
One added: “Yes we need it. Favourite flavour of any soda?”
“OMG Hungry Jack’s x SLOMW, the combo we never knew we needed,” one said.
Dirty soda has been catching on in Australia in the last 12 months — partially thanks to the popular reality show.
Madi and Will own What’s Poppin, Queensland’s first dirty soda shop. Madi, who was born in Canada before moving to Australia when she was 10, said she first found out about dirty soda during a holiday to Utah where she was introduced to the concept.
She added that growing up in Canada, soft drink culture was also incredibly big and she remembered going to the local petrol station during school breaks to get a drink.
Last year, she and her partner finally opened their business after being in the planning stages for five years.
“We’ve been doing this for six months. We were the first dirty soda shop here in Australia, and then you’ve probably seen a few others,” she told news.com.au in May.
“Those are pretty much my customers who have tried it, loved it and wanted to start it because it’s a great idea.”
Madi said when the business first started, she would link the carbonated beverages to The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and “MomTok” (primarily Utah-based Mormon mothers on TikTok) and while some people would know it from that, many Aussies had no idea. However, since then, it has grown in popularity.
