An Aussie woman‘s epic milk haul snap has helped uncover a “surprise” fact that not many people knew about.

Taking to a popular Facebook group, the Perth woman was excited to share a post about how she nabbed 14 cartons of Coles’ Lite Reduced Fat Milk, normally $2.40, for just 10 cents each.

The milk was due to expire the following day – and while many were equally excited for her bargain buy, it was her plan to freeze some of the cartons that left many surprised.

“I never knew you could freeze milk … I always bypass reduced milk as I think I wouldn’t be able to use that much before it went off,” one person wrote in the Retail Reductions Australia group. “Thanks for the tips!”

“Learning something new from comments, thank you,” another wrote.

The woman’s post also sparked questions about how long you can freeze milk, if you can pop it back in the freezer once its unfrozen and if it’s best freezing it in cubes.

But it was when she said she was going to freeze some of the cartons later that really left some Facebook users shocked. Picture: Facebook

Can you freeze milk?

According to Dairy Australia, you can freeze milk for up to three months while maintaining its quality.

It also stated that it can be a good idea to freeze milk if it’s about to expire. But once it’s defrosted, Dairy Australia advises to consume it within three to four days.

“All you need to do is pour a little (approx. 1/2 a cup) out of your plastic bottle or cardboard carton, to allow for expansion, and then put it in the freezer,” the website reads.

“Milk should be frozen for only about three months (Tip: Use a permanent marker to write the date it is going in the freezer).

“When you wish to use the milk again, put the bottle or carton back in the fridge for 24 hours to defrost.

“There may be some separation, so shake the container vigorously to make sure it’s smooth and homogenous before using. Consume thawed milk within three to four days.”
