Coles’ $5.50 bottle of wine wins major award

Exclusive: A bottle of plonk sold at Coles that costs less than $6 has taken out a prestigious Australian wine award.

A panel of three expert peer winemakers have hand-picked the Fresh & Fruity Rosé 2018 as the winner from a field of finalists chosen from more than 12 months of blind tastings.

The bottle of wine won the prestigious Winestate Best Value Wine 2019 award at the Winestate Wine of the Year Awards in Adelaide today.

With a cheap $5.50 price tag, the wine is available exclusively at Liquorland, First Choice and

Vintage Cellars stores across the country.

The shiraz and grenache blend rosé was described by the judging panel as a delicate, dry and

elegant pink wine with floral fruit fragrances.

It was also deemed to have an appealing zippy fresh palate.

Winestate Chief Executive Office Peter Simic said that it is uncommon for such a reasonably priced rosé to take out such an award.

“A rosé that achieves a four-star result should be considered a very good wine!,” he said.

“A panel of three expert peer winemaker judges independently selected this wine as the Winestate Best Value Buy Wine of the Year, and it is definitely a worthy recipient.”

Coles Head of Exclusive Liquor Brands Mia Lloyd said that the accolade is testament to the high quality of product available.

“We know our customers are always looking for a fantastic product at a really competitive price, so we’re focused on getting the best value drink solutions on shelf to deliver this for them.” he said.

“We’re very proud to be the recipients of the Winestate Best Value Wine for 2019 and are excited that for the second year in a row a wine of ours has taken out a major prize at this award ceremony.”

The award comes after the ‘Roy Morgan Alcohol Retail Currency Report’ in April this year found the Coles Group currently has a market share of 18.1 per cent, up from 16.5 per cent over the last year and was the only major retailer to gain share.

The Woolworths Group was still the clear leader with 48.3 per cent but lost 2.2 per cent points in market share due to a 4.2 per cent point drop in the share held by Dan Murphy’s. The smaller supermarkets all lost market share with IGA down 0.5 per cent points (to 2.9 per cent) and Aldi down 0.3 per cent points (to 2.8 per cent).

Roy Morgan’s Industry Communications Director Norman Morris said: “While the big two supermarket chains are competing, it appears to be largely at the expense of Aldi, IGA and other supermarkets all of whom lost share over the last 12 months.

“Despite the dominance of the supermarkets, the independent retailers have shown a market share gain of 3.1 per cent points (to 12.9 per cent) over the last year and are now ahead of hotel bottle shops which have fallen by 1.8 per cent points to 9.2 per cent.

“Our research shows a number of drivers of buying behaviour in this market, including proximity to other shops, low prices, an easily browseable range, special offers, expert staff knowledge and good service.”
