A new Gold Coast cafe has been inundated with customers eager for British food and drink – including some unusual items. HERE’S WHAT THEY’RE SELLING

MOST people on the Gold Coast won’t know the significance of Capri-Sun, square sausage or Sherbet Dib Dabs.

But so many do the owners of a new cafe have found themselves inundated with customers.

The unusual products are just a small part of the fare on offer at A Bit of Britain, which opened last week in Upper Coomera after months of preparation by owners Stephanie Cooper and Gavin Kippins.

“Once our Facebook page started building up we knew we were really onto something,” Ms Cooper said.

“We didn’t do a grand opening because we were terrified of what would happen. We just opened the doors and didn’t tell anybody.

“But it has gone absolutely nuts. We didn’t get a lot of sleep last week.”

The licenced cafe offers an extensive menu including delicacies such as battered black pudding, chip butties and mushy peas.

It even sells British cleaning products and is about to take delivery of British Easter eggs.

But Mr Kippins said two products had proven especially popular.

“Pork pies and Scotch eggs blew us away,” Mr Kippins said. “We make the Scotch eggs. I’m fed up of peeling eggs!

“And we sold something like 150 pork pies in a week.”

The cafe has hired 11 staff to help serve the approximately 52,000 people from the UK who live on the Gold Coast.

Ms Cooper said they were already considering opening a second outlet to help cater for the demand, which she said was driven by a sense of nostalgia among ex-pats.

“We’re selling memories. It takes you back to a place in the UK that brings back memories for you. People, places, smells, tastes, just the whole thing,” she said.

“Things like, when you get a sherbet dip dab or a sherbet fountain or something like that. Suddenly you’re five years old and you’re sitting eating a little lollipop and your sherbet.”
