Customers were divided on a new item from a major supermarket, with some obsessed with it while others have declared that the timing of its release was wrong.
Woolworths has embraced very American flavours with the introduction of its limited edition Pumpkin Spice Mudcake.
The $7 autumn-inspired taste caught the attention of Australian food vloggers such as @AngeEats, who declared he was “hooked” on the cake.
“Have a look at how good this looks. I love everything pumpkin spice and when I heard this was coming, I was super excited,” Ange said.
He said the cake was incredibly soft and moist “as a mudcake should be” and that the pumpkin taste was “delicious”. He added that the cinnamon spice flavour also came through.
Ange said if people love pumpkin spice, they should give the cake a try.
Nick Vavitis, who has a dessert line at the supermarket, also decided to taste test the new cake creation from Woolworths.
“It smells bloody unreal,” Nick said, before he chomped into the cake.
“That tastes exactly like a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte. Pumpkin spice is definitely very selective in flavour, you have to really love pumpkin. I love it. I definitely love this.”
Nick declared the cake was the perfect gateway for those who are on the fence about the flavour combination. He added the nutmeg aspect wasn’t too strong and that the cake was sweet.
Another social media user — @teesophiar — said she’d never had pumpkin spice in her life but had always wondered what it tasted like after seeing American social media content about it.
“It tastes a little like carrot cake — but not as carrot-y and minus the cheesecake frosting,” she said.
But, she said it was so “good”.
Social media users had a lot to say about the creation.
“Now they need to do proper cinnamon rolls and get in crescent rolls and canned biscuits,” one social media user commented.
Another said: “Makes no sense for Australia at this time of year.”
“Isn’t pumpkin spice autumnal? It’s spring,” another social media user added.
“FINALLY SOMEONE’S REVIEWING THIS BEAUTY,” one excited person declared, while one added that they thought it tasted like carrot cake.
One said: “I’m soo getting one of these tomorrow!!!”
Laura Mcleod, Woolworths’ chief cake maker, said the cake was inspired by the growing love for pumpkin spice flavours.
“Our latest Mud Cake innovation, the Pumpkin Spice Mud cake, is inspired by the growing global love for pumpkin spice flavours, especially around Halloween,” she said.
“We’ve seen this trend resonate strongly with Australians year after year, which is why we know this delicious new flavour will be a Halloween hit.”
