THE southern Gold Coast is getting its first vegan junk food shop this weekend, with the owner hoping to capitalise on an untapped market.

Vegan takeaway food specialist Feed the Earthlings - which already has one in Broadbeach - is launching number two in Burleigh this Saturday.

Owner Teaki Page said people from the southern part of the Coast didn’t tend to make it up to the northern area very often so she believed there was a whole market to be tapped into.

“We collected data from our customers which showed that 90 per cent of our customers were from north of (Broadbeach),” she said.

“Only 10 per cent come from the south. We spoke to lots of people in Burleigh and they only really come up here to Pacific Fair.

“Which makes sense, we only go down (south) to eat.”

Ms Page said her Burleigh restaurant would offer vegan comfort food like pizzas, burgers, chips and hotdogs just like the Broadbeach store.

“Our Broadbeach store is very successful,” Ms Page said of her expectations for the new shop.

“We have a really strong customer base.”

Ms Page said they had come a long way from their original opening at Ashmore a few years ago, which operated from a nondescript hole-in-the-wall. That one is no longer operating.

“We couldn’t afford tables and chairs, so we had picnic blankets,” she said.

“We couldn’t even afford signs.”

Ms Page said they would continue to work on streamlining their systems and processes to bring a positive customer experience to the new store.

She said their Broadbeach store would be closed this week for renovations and would reopen on this weekend.
