In 2023, what was once the staple of cubicle workers and corporate shakers has become an entirely democratic enterprise. And never has the humble suit been more interesting than right now.

At Afterpay Australian Fashion Week, designers put their own spin on the tailored two piece, changing up its constituent elements and adding their own aesthetic flourishes to the extent that at some points, it was a suit only by name.

Take Bec and Bridge: the party-focussed collection that showed on Tuesday evening, in the golden glow of the setting sun, veered between the ‘90s and the noughties, mixing frothy ruffle hems with sleek minimalism. The label’s take on suiting, too, was club-ready: a cropped, metallic-threaded jacket sat over low rise suiting pants. Who says suits are only for the boardroom?

Meanwhile, at Anna Quan, suits were immaculately tailored and came in blushing pastels. Romance was the focus.

It was a similar case at Aje, where a delicate, iridescent oversized suit walked the runway, layered over a crisp white shirt. A suit fit for a princess.

But the brand also went to the other end of the suiting spectrum. On the streets, fashion week attendees have been doubling and tripling down on their commitment to denim—and so too did Aje on the runway. This tailored set gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘Canadian tuxedo’.

Meanwhile St Agni, suits were longline and louche—and made even more so by the beanies they were styled with. Bare shoulders and earthy tones made their pieces casual and coastal—and anything but restrictive.

Perhaps that is the real power of the suit—oversized, ruffled, Barbie pink or sheer, it can be anything you want it to be.
