Second-hand fashion shopping basket retailing for $100K

An online luxury fashion retailer has listed a bizarre fashion item for as much as a house deposit, and it’s not even the most expensive thing on the site.

$15 Big W buy shoppers raving about

Even in these tight economic times, there is still plenty you could buy with $100,000. A big boat. A sports car. Even put a deposit on a house.

Or you could splash it all on a second-hand Chanel bag that looks likes a shopping basket.

Online luxury fashion retailer Farfetch has listed a “preloved” XXL Shopping Basket bag from its Autumn/Winter 2014 collection for $101,268.

The item description says the basket was part of a collection that formed one of Chanel’s “most memorable runways” in which the brand created its own supermarket.

The basket is “wrapped with the maison’s signature leather and chain-link straps” with a silver hardware logo charm dangling off the edge.

Journalist Sophie Walsh shared a picture of the website on Twitter, calling it “today’s edition of WTAF”.

“But you’ll look so chic at Woolies,” fellow journalist Kate Creedon replied.

And while some users replied joking they would get one for each arm – though you can’t, there’s only one left – audio producer Michelle Stephenson said they should wait for the “trolley version”.

“Fair dinkum we live in a crazy world,” another woman wrote.

But perhaps the craziest part is that the basket bag is not even the most expensive item on Farfetch. It isn’t even the most expensive handbag on the site.

Another pre-owned bag on the site – a green Hermès 2002 Kelly Doll mini bag – is listed for $136,101.

And the most expensive thing listed on the website is a preloved Patek Philippe watch from 2017.

How much does it list for? $200,000? No. Almost $2m.

That sort of price for a watch makes the shopping basket seem almost within a reasonable budget? Right?

The items are among thousands of preloved and new luxury items listed on Farfetch, a website founded by Portuguese billionaire José Neves in 2007.

Farfetch launched in 2008 as an e-commerce site for luxury boutiques to sell fashion apparel around the world.

The Patek Philippe watch is the most expensive item on the website, with a $1,838,349 price tag.

As of December 31, 2022, around 3.9m customers use the site, which lists products from more than 1400 brands, boutiques and department stores, across 50 countries, including Australia.

So it is entirely possible that if you have a spare $101,268 lying around, you can get your hands on the one and only silver-plated chain and leather shopping basket bag.

But if it is still too far out of your price range – like it would be for the majority of the population in these penny-pinching times – and you want to look Chanel chic, one user suggested a DIY hack.

“I reckon some spray paint and a few Bunnings baskets and we’re retiring early,” he wrote, suggesting pimping out the plastic knock offs become a “side hustle” for him and the journo.

Maybe then, if the knock-offs sell like hot cakes, they may be able to buy the real deal.
