Each year, the Oscars dishes up competition in both the film and fashion spheres, which is why, perhaps, the gloves were out at this year’s 96th Academy Awards. At Dolby Theatre, celebrity guests poured onto the red carpet with gloves reaching up past their forearms, opera-style. Balenciaga was behind two of the key looks: a matte pair for Carey Mulligan that sat just below her shoulders, cut to match her black-and-cream gown, which was a replica of an archival design from 1951; and another for Michelle Yeoh, who shone in silver sequins. She topped hers off with a glittering Richard Mille watch—because there’s no better time to go all-out on bling than at the Oscars.
And it was Balenciaga again when the festivities shifted to the Wallis Annenberg Centre for the Performing Arts, where stars gathered for Vanity Fair’s annual After Party. Joey King was one of the first to alight at the post-ceremony, sporting a look from the house’s recent autumn/winter ’24/’25 runway. She was followed by Hunter Schafer in a calligraphic stroke of a gown by Bottega Veneta—a black column and gloves—along with Anya Taylor-Joy in an encrusted swimming cap, mini dress and gloves by Miss Sohee.
The nature of a glove means that it adds occasion to an outfit—a formality that’s rooted in history and drama. An old-school accessory, paired with New Hollywood outfits? Now that’s a winning formula. Here, we present all the celebrities from the 2024 Oscars who took full advantage of a glove.
