A style trick we’ll be stealing.

A style trick we’ll be stealing.

Nicole Kidman knows a thing or two about style. Let us briefly invoke the image of her walking up the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in May, trailing four metres of silk tulle and ostrich feathers—a vision in the very same ballet slipper pink gown she’d worn in a Chanel No. 5 commercial directed by Baz Luhrmann in 2004. Then recall Kidman sheathed in black Armani Privé sequins at the 2023 Oscars and Schiaparelli velvet in February, or her PDA-packed streak in Balenciaga last July, when she walked the runway at haute couture autumn/winter ’22/’23.

It is no surprise, then, that Kidman’s latest press tour for upcoming espionage thriller series Special Ops: Lioness has been another exceedingly stylish venture. The 56-year-old Australian actress stepped out for a photocall today in London alongside co-star Zoe Saldana, wearing a collarless taupe suit from Ferragamo’s resort 2024 collection. Stylist Julia von Boehm preserved the set’s minimalist slant, accessorising to elevate and elongate: a pair of pointed Ferragamo boots with a curved stiletto heel, a timepiece, and a Mikimoto pearl ring.

A previous engagement had seen Kidman turn to Sam McKnight for tousled waves, but this time around, she kept her hair straight, if teased at the root—a complimentary ’do for sleek tailoring.

Elegant, monochrome and refreshingly simple. It was a refrain Kidman revisited on the red carpet later that evening, wearing a halter neck gown and sheer gloves from Anthony Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent. Here was an LBD that was as contemporary as it was classic. Present were details including a rosette at the collar and a formidable train, left to drape off one shoulder. A cut-out on the torso dialled up the sensuality, accentuated by a smokey eye and face-framing strands.

Needless to say, it’s a fitting addition to the glamorous (and unabashedly sexy) sartorial oeuvre that Kidman has been cultivating. Thigh-high slits, striking peplums and fitted skirts—with a resumé like that, an ab-baring dress and opera gloves was always going to be on the cards.

Swapping a one-shade suit for a one-shade gown? That’s a day-to-night dressing trick we’ll be stealing. If we’re taking style cues from anyone this season, it’s Kidman.
