Naomi Cambell has kicked off New York Fashion Week by modelling a see-through dress from her new collection with a fast-fashion giant – a detail that has left some fans “disappointed”.

The iconic supermodel has collaborated with emerging fashion designers Victor Anate and Edvin Thompson to create a new line for e-tailer PrettyLittleThing which launched worldwide, including in Australia, on Wednesday.

To officially launch her 70-piece collection, which features an array of mesh minidresses, figure-hugging pants suits, and sparkly accessories, the 90s poster girl held a catwalk show in New York.

Campbell walked the runway in the “black embellished mesh backless high neck maxi dress” from the PLT line, which retails for $255.

She wore the backless gown, which has a high neck fit, without a bra though she had a black G-string under the sheer number to protect her modesty.

The 53-year-old wore her long black locks in her signature sleek, straight style, pairing the statement dress with black pointed heels.

Prices for the collaboration start at $18, which buys you a pair of black mesh gloves, and tops out at $250 for Campbell’s “Crystal Beaded Dress”.

The supermodel said she decided to work with Nigerian-born Anate and Jamaican native Thompson to help design the collaboration as she’s committed to using her huge fan-base to promote up and coming talent.

“This collaboration is an extension of my commitment to create and promote opportunities for young, emerging designers,” she said Campbell in a statement.

“Within my collection, it was important to recognise and include some of the amazing talent

that’s out there.

“I’m very intentional about using my platform to create opportunities for the next generation of creatines from around the world.”

Campbell added on Instagram she was “thrilled” to turn her hand to designing “after 37 years on the catwalk”, sharing a series of snaps from the launch event.

“The process has been a dream come true, for me and the young designers that are featured.”

She also went on to thank the team from PLT, noting that while the brand has been heavily criticised for the environmental issue of its business model, the collaboration was “changing the pace of fast fashion”.

While many fans were quick to praise the star, others called out the partnership, describing it as “disappointing”.

“This is honestly sad, keeping the over consumption going and promoting it,” one raged.

“Love you and your work. But PLT?? Interested to know how it will be changing the pace of fast fashion,” another questioned.

Mostly though, people were delighted they could wear something designed by a “fashion icon”, and labelled the pieces “fire”.

“Can’t wait to rock this sis,” one said, as another declared: “Naomi you are spectacular! and the collection is beautiful! Congratulations.”

“Ohhhh…. I can feel already this is a MUST,” someone else stated.

As one wrote: “Inspired millions of black girls, still do.”
