Lorna Jane’s Flashdance pants ‘sell out’ thanks to teen TikTok trend

A popular fitness brand has been struggling to keep up with demand on a pair of pants it has been selling for two decades. Here’s why.

These Lorna Jane pants are suddenly flying off shelves

When a pair of pants she designed 20 years ago suddenly started flying off shelves again recently, Lorna Clarkson was initially confused.

The fashion designer, who owns popular Australian fitness brand Lorna Jane, began selling the loose fitting bottoms in the early noughties.

But while they’ve always been a favourite among shoppers, selling steadily in the years since, the “stretchy” pants recently began selling in record numbers – prompting the 57-year-old to question why.

As it turns out, the answer was very “surprising”.

“The Flashdance pants have been one of the brand’s best-selling styles for many years, so seeing a sudden spike in sales for this cult-favourite seemed like it came completely out of the blue,” Lorna, from Brisbane, told news.com.au

“But the unexpected rise in popularity can be attributed to none other than user-generated content on TikTok.”

The social media platform, loved by Gen Z, has spawned a fresh appreciation for the $79.99 pants that has seen multiple restocks “sell out” in less than 24 hours.

“My first thought was, ‘Wow! The teenagers are finally getting with it,’” Lorna joked, before adding: “It’s amazing to see they are being loved and enjoyed by new generations.”

And “loved” they are. The hashtag #flashdancepants currently has over 4 million views on TikTok – not bad for a pair of bottoms launched two decades ago.

Many of the videos show young women dancing in the garment, while other clips show users how to style the fashion piece.

“Just got these and already in love,” one user captioned her clip.

“I love your Lorna Jane pants,” another said.

The craze has been so huge, Lorna said it has been a “challenge to keep up with the demand”.

“We’ve been restocking them as fast as we can,” she explained.

“As a new user of TikTok myself, it’s was hard to comprehend just how far-reaching the videos were at first.

“The community are so creative with their content, it’s impressive to see the passion behind these creators. It’s even more special to see daughters loving a style that are already in their mum’s wardrobe.”
