Jennifer Lawrence’s wardrobe looks a little different these days. By now you’ve probably been made aware of her sartorial rebrand, a glimmer of which we spotted when the 32-year-old broke her acting hiatus with Don’t Look Up, but blossomed on her press tour for the comedy No Hard Feelings. It was as if stylist Jamie Mizrahi had taken Lawrence’s old closet and trimmed off the busyness—the sequins, the metallic eyeshadow, the cut-outs and corsets. In its place was a vision of contemporary dressing that rested on shape and easy glamour. Suddenly, Lawrence was swapping slips for sheaths and wearing colour with restraint: a white Alaïa shirt dress, cinched at the waist with a leather belt; a black Dior column gown, coupled with opera gloves and a slicked high ponytail.
But this refrain of Lawrence’s—a less-is-more approach to fashion that we’ve been calling ‘quiet luxury’—has been most visible in her everyday style. You might remember these images of Lawrence dog-walking in New York City, that just about brought the internet to a halt in June. The jumper tied around her shoulders, the trousers puddled over her ballet flats, the khaki trench coat, worn unbelted—all were simple pieces, but it was the finer details that made Lawrence’s outfit feel expensive. Here she was, at ease in a well-made shirt or trouser, practising a brand of chic that didn’t need to speak loudly, if at all. There might be plenty to challenge in the saying “money talks but wealth whispers”, but for Lawrence at least, the adage holds true.
As it turns out, looking effortlessly put-together boils down to a handful of ideas, and Lawrence’s off-duty style embodies all of them. Here, we break down her fashion formula.
