Expat reveals the three things every Australian wears in winter

A Canadian expat has revealed the three things all Aussies do to cope in winter and why the colder months are so “hard” here.

A Canadian expat has observed a wild detail about Aussie culture.

Instead of having warm houses, we embrace comically snugly clothing during winter, even when we are inside.

Alexandra Tuohey, 32, who lives in Victoria, said Australian winters are “hard” because of our freezing homes.

“The winters are hard because it is so cold insides our homes and expensive to heat them. I cope by having the split systems on,” she told news.com.au.

She has noticed three clothing items that Australians cling to during the cooler months to survive.

“Australian homes are so cold that they actually invented their own type of clothing: indoor thermal wear,” she explained on TikTok.

The famous Oodie is a wearable blanket and the perfect outfit if you decide it is time to start looking like a giant blob.

Ms Touhey didn’t exactly have kind words for the oversized item.

“This might be the ugliest thing you’ve ever seen but it is vital to survive in Australian winter,” she explained.

The next item on her list? Ugg boots.

The Aussie slippers are lined with sheepskin and are very warm, to the point that some people’s trotters sweat when wearing them.

Today’s Karl Stefanovic is such a big fan that he’ll air his legs out by wearing shorts but keep his hoofs warm with uggs.

Expat reveals how Aussies survive winter

Ms Touhey gave the shoes the respect they deserved and said they are a very important item for Australians to get through winter.

While she admitted to wearing them back home in Canada, she explained the shoes were strictly outdoors when she was there.

“It is the perfect shoe to wear inside a cold Australian home. You can go from outside to inside seamlessly,” she said.

The famous puffer jacket is the final piece of clothing Ms Touhey thinks you need to thrive in Aussie winters.

She said the jacket was for any occasion that Aussies “can’t wear their Oodies” because it wouldn’t be socially acceptable.

The puffer jacket has become a huge Aussie staple and is beloved by everyone from finance bros to fitness influencers. The jacket is only for the brave enough Aussies that decide they “want to add some puff” to their bodies.

Ms Touhey said that Aussie winters are actually harsher than Canadian ones, even though it gets colder there.

“It is a lot colder outside, but we are better equipped to deal with the cold. Houses are properly insulated and we get fully dressed up in winter gear if we are spending time outside,” she explained.

In response to Ms Touhey’s clothing claims, Aussies were pretty happy to cope it on the chin.

“Watching this in my Ugg’s and my avocado Oodie,” one joked.

“Me watching this in a 13 degree house wearing an Oodie and ugg boots,” another admitted.

“Listening while wearing my Oodie and Uggs while having my morning coffee in Melbourne,” someone else declared.

“We will do anything but insulate our homes,” someone quipped.

“I feel offended as I wear that exact Oodie,” another said.
