The primary calendar in Australia runs on the Gregorian method (January 1st being New Year’s Day), but Lunar New Year—sometimes known as Chinese New Year, but celebrated by various cultures throughout Asia—is of equal significance.
Based on the lunisolar calendar, which considers the movements of both the sun and moon, Lunar New Year falls slightly later than its Gregorian counterpart; this year, on February 10, 2024.
There are 12 animals on the Chinese zodiac, each representing something different for those born in each year. In 2024, the emblem of Lunar New Year is the dragon, which symbolises prosperity. According to tradition, those born in the Year of the Dragon are noted for their energy and bravery, as well as their stubbornness, along with other qualities in Chinese culture. But no matter the zodiac animal, Lunar New Year is a major cause for celebration; lanterns are lit and floated into the sky to commemorate letting go of our past selves (various cities in Australia will also host a lantern festival). Customary foods like moon cakes are shared and enjoyed. Money is also gifted in red envelopes, as a custom for wishing good luck to others.
Given the importance of the celebration, brands have also found their own ways to celebrate Lunar New Year, creating one-of-a-kind pieces that encapsulate the mood of each year.
A common thread among many pieces is a dragon motif, to celebrate this year’s zodiac, as well as the colour red, which signifies celebration in Chinese culture. Aside from red, yellow is another lucky colour, symbolising wealth and prosperity.
Though various brands like Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Loewe commemorate Lunar New Year with special products, note that none of them feature sharp objects—a feature many avoid in their gifts, as it can mean one person intends to cut ties with another.
