Bored Sydneysiders create ‘Gladys guessing game’

Moments before Gladys Berejiklian delivered the crushing news lockdown was being extended, many claim they already knew. Here’s how.

Bored Sydneysiders have created a game to help make the daily NSW press conferences a little less gloomy.

Participants have been flooding the comments section of the NSW Health Facebook livestreams to guess what colour outfit Gladys Berejiklian will be wearing to deliver the state’s Covid update.

While the game only lasts several minutes, from the moment the stream starts until the Premier steps into sight, it’s fast attracted thousands of players.

It’s become such a “highlight” of the daily event, betting website Sportsbet has even got in on the action, offering odds on what colour jacket Ms Berejiklian will wear to deliver the state’s Covid update.

On Wednesday, Ms Berejiklian chose a long black coat to announce Sydney and greater Sydney’s two week lockdown was to be extended for another seven days, a choice some are claiming was a “clue” she was delivering bad news.

“Gladys wearing a black coat for the mourning of NSW,” one person tweeted.

“I knew it was bad when she stepped out in black,” one said on Facebook.

“Gladys wearing black to mourn my social life,” another commented.

Of course, there were many who guessed incorrectly, with some thinking she’d choose a red coat or a blue jacket.

“If is bad she will wear red,” one guessed.

“She’ll defo choose blue to lighten the mood,” another reasoned.

As the Covid situation has developed the past two weeks, many have praised the game for “bringing joy” during this time.

“The @gladysb guessing game is fun,” one Twitter user wrote, while another said it was “the small things” that get them through.

Victorians have pointed out a similar thing occurred during the state’s infamous 2020 lockdown when they would guess whether Premier Dan Andrews had good or bad news based on whether he was wearing a North Face jacket – suggesting Ms Berejiklian could pop up wearing one soon.

Odds for Thursday’s colour are already up, with the most common guess according to Sportsbet being that Ms Berejiklian wears “blue/navy”.
