Here are some altogether pleasant things about going to snow: hot chocolate, mulled wine, a chance to wear Fair Isle jumpers, the feeling at the end of the day that you’ve really earned your supper (make it fondue!). Yes, for some the feeling of gliding down a mountain is a sensation unequalled in joy, and for thrill seekers, surely nothing can compare. But others surely, like me, prefer the après side of a snow holiday—the feeling that with just the right snow suit or nubby half-zip sweater or muff you could be the very essence of a Slim Aarons tableau circa 1977 at Gstaad.
In any case, skiing covers two of my favourite things about fashion: dressing to a theme and dressing with all the gear, even if you have no idea. Clothes are after-all the ultimate way to reinvent yourself! On the slopes you could be a snow bunny, a fur wearing princess in exile, a schnapps drinking good sport—anybody really.
And just like the slew of brands channelling all things tennis, skiing is another leisurely pursuit with an appealing and timeless aesthetic. The likes of Miu Miu, Gucci, Prada and Tory Burch have all done ski capsules, and who could forget Karl Lagerfeld’s last collection for Chanel in 2019, set in the alpine village of your fashion dreams?
Yes, the actual ski gear might be sleeker and have more technical capabilities now, but the overall vibe remains.
So whether you’re planning a double black, a soft snow shuffle or a hot chocolate by the fire in your lodge, there’s plenty of ways to buy into the après ski lifestyle.
