‘Embarrassing’: Fashionistas slam Prada model choice

Designer fashion powerhouse, Prada has faced intense backlash for its latest campaign which some believe has “missed the mark”.
The luxury fashion house took to Instagram to share promotional images for the ‘Linea Rossa’ Fall/Winter 2022 fashion collection on Wednesday, causing a stir within the industry.
The collection, which has been designed to “interlace the discreet demands of outdoor winter sport and metropolitan living,” was modelled in photographs posted online by TikTok star, Charli D’Amelio.
Fashion fanatics expressed their frustration at Prada’s choice to include the 18-year-old dancer as the face of the line, in thousands of comments and posts on social media.

“For such a huge company, this is embarrassing,” said one social media user.
“Prada you’re better than this,” “this is the weirdest thing I’ve seen all day,” and “someone’s getting fired,” said others.
There was also confusion around the target audience for the campaign, given the Dancing with the Stars contestant’s primary viewership is mostly made up of adolescents and young-adults who “don’t have a credit card.”
“Know your customers,” said a disappointed Twitter user.

Not only were fashionistas disappointed by the “un-classy” choice in model, they were also shocked by the “obvious” photoshopping of D’Amelio in the promotional pictures which appeared like “a really bad movie advertisement.”
“This is her picture for the Hunger Games movie,” said one Twitter user.
“She is already really pretty, there was no need to do all of this horrible photoshop,” said another annoyed user on the campaign post.
“Who approved this shot/terrible editing job.”
Multiple social media users said they did not recognise D’Amelio at first, given the alleged facial enhancements, body contouring and features that had been edited out.
A number of users commenting on the campaign highlighted the criticism is not directed at D’Amelio, rather at the brand and came to the teen’s defence.
“Charli D’Amelio is a queen for Prada and every kid in the comments is straight up jealous,” said one D’Amelio fan.
D’Amelio can be seen wearing Prada’s new $4,900 minimalist puffer jacket, $1,220 ‘Tech Rec Nylon Piqué’ sleeveless top and $1,650 leggings.
The TikTok icon has previously attended Prada fashion shows as a guest and fan of the brand such as in Prada Milan 2020 Fashion Week Show.
D’Amelio is the second most popular influencer on the video sharing app, with 147.5 million followers after rising to fame in 2019 for positing a series of videos in lockdown.
She has since become the first person to reason 10 billion likes on the platform and the first also to appear in a Super Bowl advertisement.
D’Amelio has also topped the TikTok rich list earning $151,411 per post on the platform, leaving her with a net worth of $28,625,600.
She has also partnered with big brands such as Invisalign, Morphe, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Hollister.
