Disney days are gone! Parents torn over taking kids to Olivia Rodrigo concert

"Some parents may not be comfortable with a child that young seeing it."

Olivia Rodrigo Live — A concert you won't forget!

It’s official - Olivia Rodrigo has touched down in Australia to wrap up her award-winning Guts World Tour.

Though the singer has already made headlines Down Under for falling into the stage in Melbourne, and accidentally putting siblings on the kiss cam at her first Sydney show, there are still two shows left before her departure, and plenty more to see.

Despite many of her fans originating from her Disney days with Bizaardvark and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Rodrigo’s music has extended far beyond this, seeing her well and truly break through her kid-friendly mould with songs like Logical and All-American Bitch.

Because of this, parents are torn as to whether or not it’s appropriate for young eyes and ears.

If you’re heading down to Qudos Bank Arena with little ones tonight or tomorrow night, here’s everything you need to know - from someone who’s seen it firsthand.

'Her songs are pretty explicit'

Overall, whether or not the show is kid-friendly depends on you and what you deem appropriate for your child.

Have a look at the lyrics of the songs on the setlist and some videos from previous legs of the tour to gauge whether or not it’s something you’re comfortable with your child seeing - it’s not quite Bangerz-level, but definitely not what you’d expect from a Disney star!

Parents have gone viral for giving their children a pass on swear words for the night, like TikTok user @tbew.

But, others aren’t so sold on the idea.

After asking Reddit if the show was appropriate for her eight-year-old, one mum was met with a host of negative responses.

“It’s up to you as a parent but there is definitely some sexy choreography throughout the show (lifting up her shirt, grabbing her breasts, laying on the ground and thrusting into the air, etc) that some parents may not be comfortable with a child that young seeing,” one commenter said.

“There will probably be other kids there but imo her concerts aren't meant for kids that age,” said another.

“Her songs are pretty explicit, it's not surprising that the dancing and overall design matches that and is aimed at an older audience.”

It gets LOUD

Okay, we know, concerts are loud. But, this one is on another level.

Aussie TikTok user @amy_wooller has been advocating for the use of earplugs at concerts for months in the lead up, not just for children, but for adults too.

“I don’t care how old you are, what your current hearing is like, or where you’re sitting, it is going to be frickin loud,” she said in one video.

“Wear them as a preventative measure.”

According to the Qudos Bank Arena website, earplugs are available at all events at the Information Desk located in the Grand Foyer for $2 a pair if you don’t have your own reusable ones.

Watch out especially for the scream in All-American Bitch!

Is it safe?

Sitting is always going to be best for little ones at concerts - not only can they see better, but you don’t have to worry as much about those around you. Concerns around fainting, dehydration and crowd crush are very real!

But, when I went to the show, almost half of the VIP area was made up of parents and kids.

One parent has shared her positive experience of taking her daughter to the show on TikTok.

"Luckiest little nine-year-old," she said.

If you are heading into one of this week’s shows with GA tickets, there is a safe way to do it.

Ensure you have enough room to get out for water or bathroom breaks when needed (and for extra dancing space!).

Or, stand closer to one of the sides - the left will give you a better view for songs like Traitor and Get Him Back!, or see Happier, Obsessed and (hopefully) All I Want up close on the right.
