New data has revealed a shift in our bedroom antics as Aussies kiss goodbye to a once popular sex act in favour of something else.

New data has revealed a controversial sex act is declining in popularity, spawning the rise of a bedroom activity that was once deemed “boring”.

The number of Australians drinking alcohol has been slowly decreasing in recent years, aside from a small spike during the 2020-21 lockdown, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

But our changing attitudes towards booze is not only affecting our drinking habits, it’s also having a knock-on effect on our bedroom antics, new research has found.

Statistics shared by adult store Lovehoney have revealed that while 69 per cent of Aussies have had sex under the influence, 51 per cent prefer to sex when sober.

Sydney sex therapist Christine Rafe said the data shows “more Australians are recognising the impact alcohol has on their sexual experiences and relationships” adding that “as a result, they’re choosing to engage in sober sex more often”.

“This shift shows that people are becoming more intentional about their sexual connections,” Ms Rafe told news.com.au.

“They want to feel present and engaged, which can lead to more meaningful and satisfying experiences with their partners.

“Without alcohol dulling their senses or clouding their judgement, they’re also more in tune with their desires and able to communicate those clearly.”

For those in relationships, ditching booze can have a profound effect on the partnership, Ms Rafe said.

“Without the haze of alcohol, you’re better able to engage with your partner, respond to their cues, and understand your own body,” she explained.

“This heightened awareness naturally boosts self-confidence, as you feel more in control and assured.

“Sober sex also fosters intimacy – when you’re not under the influence, you’re more emotionally available, which helps you connect with your partner on a deeper level. The clarity and mutual presence that sober sex offers allow for better communication, more trust, and ultimately, a stronger bond between partners.”

The rise of sober sex has also seen fewer people engaging in one night stands, the research also found.

Australia historically has one of the highest rates of casual sex in the world, with 2023 data showing 64 per cent of men and 52 per cent of women admit to having engaged in a one-night stand.

But the research from Lovehoney revealed 24 per cent of Aussies who have participated in the casual sex act did so while drinking.

Of those surveyed, 16 per cent said they have had a negative experience during drunk sex, while 7 per cent claimed they prefer sex while intoxicated.

“I think it’s important to acknowledge that everyone’s experiences with alcohol and sex are different, and there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach,” Ms Rafe added.

“For some, alcohol can serve as a tool for relaxation, but it’s worth exploring how sober sex could enhance your relationship and personal experience on a more sustained and long-term basis.

“Many people find that once they try it, they actually prefer sober sex because of the clarity, control, and intimacy it offers. It’s all about discovering what works best for you and your partner and being open to trying new approaches to your sexual wellness.”
