WHATEVER plans you had for Saturday, cancel them — a cob loaf festival is coming to the Gold Coast.
From 4pm on August 18, NightQuarter will pay homage to the humble cob with an event celebrating the creamy, crusty goodness of the shared party plate.
NightQuarter director Michelle Christoe said the inaugural event will showcase all kinds of cob loaves, from sweet to savoury.
“So far we have 25 different cob loaves for everyone to try,” Ms Christoe said.
“Some are weird and wacky — cob loaf with gelato, curry in a cob loaf, Nutella and marshmallow, melted chocolate, we have cheese fondue in a cob loaf.
“Chunky smoked beef brisket cob, seafood mornay, loaded fries cob … to the traditional spinach dip in a cob.”

NightQuarter is known for hosting food event nights, however Ms Christoe said this idea initially seemed a little left of field.
“It was one that was brought to me by one of our marketing team members,” Ms Christoe said.
“I thought it was a bit unusual.
“We run some unusual festivals, we’ve done an ice cream festival, last weekend we did a beer, bourbon and barbecue festival.
“We’re all about supporting different ideas we all bring forward.”
Ms Christoe said the festival will also host a community cob loaf competition, where members of the public can put their cobs up for judging in the hopes of being crowned the cream of the crop.

While Ms Christoe’s career in bakeries has kept her finger in the dip for many years, she couldn’t quite explain the cob loaf’s resurgence as a millennial obsession.
“I think it’s something that people romanticise about when it comes to sharing with people, and that’s what cob loaves are all about,” she said.
“The whole ’80s, ’90s food, cob loaves were very much of that era. Every time you had a party there was a cob loaf.”
