Caravanner's 'gross' towel act divides Aussies

"That's actually how you spread things," said one mum on social media. But, is it ever okay?

Is it rude to set up camp right in front of someone's else's tent?

When you’re heading on a trip where all you’ll have is what you pack, you need to be smart about what you’re bringing with you.

Along with food, clothes, cooking appliances, and your entire set up for camping or caravanning, not much else can fit, meaning some things are going to get the boot.

One thing that apparently lots of people have thoughts about is towels.

“Does anyone impose rules?”

An Aussie caravan owner has taken to Facebook asking for advice about their towel situation when travelling.

“Towel use question," the poster began.

"My wife and I share a towel, my kids also share a towel. Don’t ask why, I don’t know why."

However, the poster went on to get a little… weird about the specifics.

"Does anyone impose rules on which parts of the towel dry what? i.e. The ends are for your end, the middle for your face?” he asked.

“I don’t see a problem”

Whilst few were willing to comment on the latter half of the question, many agreed with the poster in that sharing towels was okay.

“We share. You’re coming out clean from the shower so I don’t see a problem, didn’t even realise it could be a problem,” one commenter said.

“We have 5 kids but only 4 towels hang in their bathroom and no one cares. Hubby will happily use any towel too,” said another.

“The number of people that sleep together, probably jump into bed without showering or only wash their sheets once a month should not be mortified by this,” a third person pointed out.

“That’s how you spread things!”

However, plenty more disagree with the notion, saying it’s gross and unsanitary.

“Ew no, towels are the same as toothbrushes, you don't share them, ever!” said one commenter.

“Wow, do people actually share towels? What does that save on? Wouldn't you have to wash it more often anyway? Get your own towel!!! Problem solved,” said another person.

Commenters on another Facebook post agreed with this ruling - towel sharing is a no-go.

“Gross, why would ppl share? That's actually how you spread things - never heard of ppl in own home sharing a towel,” said one person.

“Sharing is dangerous, you easily spread germs and infections,” another agreed.

“We have always had our own towels. Never shared. Only time is when you get out and realise your towel is missing lol,” said a third.

The Kidspot team weighs in

When it comes to towel sharing, the Kidspot team has given a solid, ‘it depends’.

For Nama, it’s a huge no.

“FFS. What does it achieve apart from making anyone who hears about it vomit in their mouths? Super gross,” she said.

Emily said that certain circumstances determine whether it’s okay or not.

“I think there's a difference between sharing multiple towels in a household and sharing one towel between many people,” she said.

Leah said that whilst she’d do it specifically when travelling, it’s not something she’d be employing at home.

“At home, it's a hard no! Everyone has their own towel. But when we are camping and need to pack light, it's one for the kids and one for the adults,” she said.
