Caffe Republic review: Eggs benny will stop you in your tracks

They say breakfast is always the most important meal. At Caffe Republic the offerings are so good they serve them all day.

YOU know that cafe with the amazing menu you’ve never explored because the first thing you tried was so good you couldn’t imagine a morning without it?

Caffe Republic’s bubble and squeak eggs benny ($16) is that dish for me.

It’s got all of the elements: crispy bacon to match its satisfying shallow-fried base, liquid-centred poached eggs and enough hollandaise to make a gloriously gooey mess of the lot.

Try and improve on perfection if you like: you can swap the vegies for a more traditional English muffin, or layer on spinach and mushrooms, house-smoked ocean trout and paleo pulled pork.

I could go on, but that would be underselling what really is a broadly appealing menu.

Way back before gluten-free was the big “thing”, owner-chef Peter Dufty’s conscientious approach to ingredients was a saviour for anyone with food allergies.

In line with Peter’s own transformed lifestyle, the latest menu is a more formal foray into paleo territory.

Breakfast is served all day and includes paleo pulled pork on a coconut tortilla with raw tomato salsa, guacamole and fried egg ($19) and hot smoked ocean trout, sweet potato rosti, avocado, poached eggs and chimichurri sauce ($21).

The innovative is balanced by old favourites: savoury mince on Turkish ($17) and triple-stack vanilla pancakes with berry coulis, maple syrup and ice cream ($15).

Give your coffee the Bulletproof Upgrade ($5), topping two shots of organic espresso with organic coconut oil and organic butter whipped in.

Get in early for a slice of the peppermint and chocolate raw cheesecake action. It’s one of the most popular treats in the well-stocked cabinet.
