THE owners of a new cafe in Florida Gardens are expecting in more ways than one.

Engaged couple Nenad Miljkovic and Sandra Ostojic are the owners of cafe and restaurant Sandrino, a project they hope will foster their future as a family in the Broadbeach Waters neighbourhood.

“I was working in commercial real estate and Nenad bought this for me to run,” Sandra says.

“He said ‘I don’t want you working for anyone anymore, this can be your baby’.

“We’ve always liked this area and we always end up coming back to Broadbeach Waters. It’s very family orientated and quiet, and I’ve got a little baby coming. We see ourselves purchasing a family house here in the future.”

Nenad works as a financial broker and it was one of his clients who introduced him to the space, formerly occupied by the Trembling Cup Cafe.

He said a passion for hospitality was sparked in his adolescence when he worked part time while studying at university.

“I can say that for the last, maybe, 15 years of my life, I’ve always had the passion to run a cafe,” Nenad says.

“The more I was looking I couldn’t find anything suitable. We had a look at (this place), fell in love with it straight away, it’s a cool little cute place.

“We made a decision pretty quickly. It’s on an island, it’s north facing, there’s six other retail shops, so there’s really no competitors.”

The menu is inspired by different corners of Europe, including the couple’s Serbian heritage, as well as classic Australian breakfast and lunch fare.

“The name Sandrino, in Serbian, means Sandra’s. I found out Sandrino is an Italian man’s name, too, so it has an Italian ring to it,” Nenad says.

“After we bought it we went overseas and got inspired by the Italian, Spanish and French food scene, that stylish, family orientated cafe where you can see people are passionate.

“So food wise, we will keep it Australian cuisine with a European twist. We’ve sold quite a few eggs benedict, we’ve had fish of the day, which was a beautiful crumbed barramundi.

“A popular Serbian dish is sarma, and the chevapi which is traditional skinless sausages. We’ll do mezze boards with cheese and cured meats, and share plates as well.

“Being a cafe and a restaurant and bar, it’s two styles of restaurants in one, so in the evenings we’ll do char grill and woodfire pizza.”

The kitchen is headed up by the chef at Trembling Cup, who Sandra says worked at a restaurant at a Hilton Hotel in Dubai for seven years.

“We asked him to stay while we were gone and to take over the kitchen,” Sandra says.

“We just clicked, our vision was aligned with what he wants to do as well. The way he presents the dishes is really amazing, with the edible flowers and details.”

While the final touches are being put on Sandrino, including the tick of approval on their liquor license, the couple have grand plans to make the restaurant a community hub with entertaining weekly and monthly events.

“We were talking about doing a spit roast once a month and the customers loved the idea of that. I’d also love to start doing Sunday afternoon sessions with live music and happy hour drinks,” Nenad says.

“We want to focus on turning it into a bar, and make it a great community (hub) but still open it up to everyone else outside of Broadbeach Waters.”

Sandrino is open from 7am daily at 1/1 Naranga Ave, Broadbeach Waters.
