Brekkie review: 42Fifteen

IT might not be the most orthodox breakfast menu around but that doesn’t mean it’s not good — in fact, it’s very good

IF you’re looking for something non-traditional for breakfast then 42Fifteen cafe in Southport is your place.

Non-traditional options abound on the menu.

Sure, there is toast and bagels with a range of spreads, bacon and eggs and eggs benny but there is also the coyo fruit bowl (with dairy free began coconut yoghurt, green papaya, pineapple compote and so much more), Franks & Beans with its grilled chorizo and house-made beans plus — wait for it — the pork and kimchi omelet.

The latter is what I went for — and it was so good I went for it again the next time. And again the time after that.

It’s pretty funky. And damn tasty. How could an omelet combining spicy kimchi, tamari and honey-roasted pork belly, fluffy cabbage, mayo and sweet soy not be?

It’s also just a pleasant place to start your day — they have all the newspapers, their coffee is served up with a healthy side of chitchat and on those exceedingly hot days the staff will even wander out unprompted and serve you up chilled water from the fridge, telling you “you’re gonna need this”.

42Fifteen co-owner Peter Batley, a chef who started the cafe almost three years ago with partner and fellow chef Julie Rogers, attributes her for the unorthodox breakfast menu.

“We basically cook what we want to eat ourselves,” Peter says. “That’s the basis of it. We get fed up with not being able to get breakfast in the afternoon and everyone doing exactly the same thing.”
