Mmm-mmm! As voting opens on the Bulletin’s final Best Of competition for 2021, the reigning champions for Best Ice Cream on the Gold Coast say life is pretty sweet.
Burleigh’s Scoop Gelati co-owners, Cameron and Jennifer Murphy, who took out the title last year, said the last 12 months had been challenging for the family-owned gelato bar.
Cameron said it had been an uncertain time with border closures, but their business had grown.
“The competition certainly made a difference – we had people always stopping to try,” he said.
“We love friendly competition between gelato shops, as it keeps us striving to come up with new and exciting flavours and innovations.”
Mr Murphy said they also added to their trophy cabinet at the 2021 Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show Awards, with accolades for their blood orange sorbet and peanut butter and jelly gelato.
Scoop makes gelato on-site every day to keep up with the demand through summer and the business hired three new staff members to ensure it was prepared for Queensland’s borders reopening.
“We do find that most of our trade usually was locals in the area who are familiar with us, although prior to Covid-19, 20 to 30 per cent of our customers were interstate travellers,” Mr Murphy said.
“Before borders even opened, we were already up 20 per cent in trade for December.”
