COLBY HYLAND might not see you but he will make you smile all day long.
Just like his sister Maddin, the five-month-old miracle bub was born with bilateral congenital cataracts, cloudiness of the lens of the eye, but it has not stopped him from living life to the full.
Mum and dad, Jason and Lauren Hyland, nominated Colby for the 2020 Bulletin’s Cutest Baby Competition because he was the “happiest baby despite everything he’s gone through already”.
“He has to wear little contacts and only seeing about one metre but he is the happiest baby I have ever seen,” Jason Hyland said.
“I don’t think I heard him cry for the first three months. He is just so happy and smiles all the time.”

Mr Hyland said Colby and Maddin’s diagnosis was heartbreaking as the genetic disposition was very rare. There is around 2.2 cases of congenital cataracts per 10,000 births in Australia.
“We lost our baby Illiya at 23 weeks, and she had it too but Zari, 5, is fine and doesn’t have the recessive gene.
“My wife and I don’t have the condition, so it’s been life-changing, especially with Colby’s surgery during COVID-19, but we are so close and love each other lots.”
The Bulletin is on the hunt to find the Gold Coast’s cutest baby for 2020 and we want to hear from you!
