IF you need a little ‘vitamin sea’ in your diet, look no further.

Last year, the Great British Fryer topped the list. But there’s a new king in town.

Check out who you voted as the best fish n chips in the city.

10. Sorrento Seafoods

LOCATION: Sorrento Shopping Village, Bundall

This is your classic friendly local fish and chip shop, with a range of fresh and cooked seafood available daily.

Whether it’s the classic New Zealand hoki used for the special, the thick-cut, beer-battered chips, the generous serving sizes or the layers of butcher’s paper, this shop will take you back to childhood and unwrapping your haul from the local kiosk.

The calamari is also a popular choice for regulars.

9. Tally Valley Seafood

LOCATION: 2/7 Trees Rd, Tallebudgera

Tally Valley manager Luellen Foster says people come from far and wide for their fish selection.

“Customers love our snapper, it’s probably the best dish you can get here,” she says.

“The snapper and our salmon are just so fresh. Our salmon is the best sashimi-grade salmon you can get. It’s handline caught in Tasmania. And our barramundi comes from Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory. The secret for our snapper is to grill it in garlic butter. It’s totally healthy and succulent.”

8. Get Hooked Seafoods

With seating overlooking the Tweed River, the only way this fish could be fresher is if it jumped out of the water and on to your plate.

The fish selection changes regularly depending on what’s around, but can include snapper, John Dory, mullet, flathead, barramundi, bream, salmon, trevally, blue eye cod, jewfish, sea perch, gold band, flake and more, all prepared fresh in house with high-quality oil and crumb.

7. Fish Shak

Open less than a year ago by the people behind Longboards Laidback Eatery and Bar, owner Justin Allie says their aim was to create a casual, licensed eatery serving fresh, local and sustainable seafood while taking advantage of the scenic Broadwater surrounds.

“Families can come down to the park and kick the football around, mum can have a wine, dad can have a cold beer and all come together for the food,” he says.

6. Red Hot Cod

LOCATION: 1/1716 Gold Coast Hwy, Burleigh Heads

Just over a decade ago, Simon and Buffie Scott disappeared from the Burleigh food scene, selling off the local favourite Red Hot Wok and heading south for a slower-paced life in northern NSW.

They’ve been back as Red Hot Cod since November and locals couldn’t be happier.

“It’s all Australian and New Zealand seafood. We’re not getting fish in from Asia. You know what you’re eating,” Simon says.

5. Scales Seafood

LOCATION: 47 Kennedy Dr, Tweed Heads

Choose from fresh fish, prawns, crab, oysters, squid, octopus, mussels and more at Tweed Heads’ beloved Scales Seafood, most of which is caught by local trawlers.

The team deliver personal service and an expert knowledge in everything seafood, which means you can have them cook it for you instore, buy ready-made fillets or have them fillet a whole fish on the spot.

There won’t be any chips left over, either — lightly fried and perfectly salted, you’ll eat the lot.

4. Great British Fryer

They won this list last year after being open only nine weeks and since then they’ve also won the FRDC competition for best Fish and Chips in Queensland.

“We lived in Scotland until we moved to New Zealand and then to Australia. Both Scotland and New Zealand do wonderful fish and chips and when we moved to Australia we just missed them.” Turns out a lot of people do.

3. Kiwi Fish and Chips

LOCATION: 14/112 Discovery Dr, Helensvale

Last year when they placed in this list with their Helensvale location, Melissa and Tommy-Lee Doull said they’d like to continue opening Kiwi Fish and Chip stores all over the Gold Coast.

Since then they’ve done just that, continuing their existing Helensvale and Broadbeach locations, adding a Labrador and Carrara location and a Coomera shop opening in August. Tommy says, above all, quality and consistency is their focus.

2. Chevron Island Seafoods

LOCATION: 48-50 Thomas Dr, Chevron Island

Frank Vayonitis and Warren Ebbels are running the show at Chevron Island Seafood.

“Frank has owned it for 22 years. We pride ourselves on service and good food,” Warren says.

“It’s good old-fashioned fish and chips — good batter, daily fresh oil and, of course, fresh seafood. Fresh is the best. From your snapper, flake, good grilled salmon, barra, sea perch — it’s got to be fresh. And we do a lot of homemade stuff, too — sauces, marinades, dressings, all the little things people usually buy in. A good team is essential as well.”

Peter and Peisie Hawkes have found a family out at Mudgeeraba Seafoods, after taking over the shop and giving it a total renovation almost two years ago.

Pete says, along with a fantastic, reliable and friendly team, he does the marketing while his wife takes care of the food.

“It’s my job to get the customers in and it’s my wife’s job to keep them there,” Pete says.

“Our friendly nature is No. 1 for us and the cleanliness of the shop. Our top sellers would be the basic NZ hoki fish and chips, we sell hundreds every week, and then the calamari curls and we also do amazing fish and calamari burgers.”
