THE hollan-days of bad eggs benedict are behind us.
Last year you crowned 42fifteen as the best, can they do it again?
Here’s the top 10 on the Gold Coast, as voted by you.
10. Mr Bengel
LOCATION: 1099 Gold Coast Hwy, Palm Beach
Mr Bengel’s Justine Tompsett says mixing tradition with the freshest ingredients makes their benny a winner.
“Customers love our eggs benedict because it’s your traditional style benny, but we use the freshest local produce and perfectly balanced hollandaise sauce, which is what makes it such a well-rounded dish.
The classic English muffins, wilted spinach, James Street Deli ham and poached eggs with hollandaise – you can’t beat it, it’s a total crowd-pleaser.”
9. Stellarossa
LOCATION: Benowa Village, Cnr Ashmore Rd and Ross St, Benowa
Franchises can run the risk of being impersonal, but not this one.
Open in the new Benowa Plaza development, general manager Tim Wotton says Stellarossa’s eggs benedict has become a daily ritual for many locals and is among their top sellers.
Tim says the team pride themselves on their freshly prepared breakfast menu, all cooked to order under the guidance of a group of chefs.
8. Espresso Moto
LOCATION: 2/1389 Gold Coast Hwy, Palm Beach
This year marks Espresso Moto’s hat-trick on the best eggs benedict list.
Co-owner Shannon Baier-Dry puts it down to consistent cooking, cracking hollandaise and service with a smile.
“To be honest, it’s probably consistency that keeps people coming back. Every day our chefs make our hollandaise from scratch, we only use the freshest ingredients and breakfast is always served with a smile.”
7. Nonna’s Italian
LOCATION: Harbour Town, Biggera Waters
After unveiling their million-dollar makeover in November, Nonna’s was given a new look venue and fresh tasting menu.
But it’s not all 1m pizzas and crazy shakes, their humble eggs benedict has mouths watering as well.
The team make the hollandaise fresh in-house every day, use local eggs and produce suppliers and as a result, sell more than 500 a week. That’s a lot of bennies.
6. Serendipity Espresso
LOCATION: 4/328 Scottsdale Dr, Varsity Lakes
Co-owner Tania Smallacombe says when it comes to the perfect benny, the eggs matter just as much as the hollandaise.
“Our chef puts a lot of love into our eggs benny. Poached eggs are his thing, he always cooks them perfectly and that’s important for an eggs benny. We use really good organic bread, lots of hollandaise and finish with a balsamic drizzle. Most of the feedback we get is, ‘That was the best eggs benedict I’ve ever had’.”
5. 42Fifteen
LOCATION: 9 Davenport St, Southport
No stranger to this list, 42Fifteen took out the top spot last year and, while they may have been knocked off the perch, they’ve still got legions of fans.
Owner Peter Batley says the secret to the hollandaise that’s hooked locals is a touch of orange zest to give the typically creamy sauce a bit of tang.
Take your pick of toppings from cider-glazed ham, smoked salmon, American bacon or truffled mushrooms.
4. The Fresh Pantry
LOCATION: 5A 100-106 Old Pacific Highway, Oxenford
The crew at The Fresh Pantry believe the classic shouldn’t be tampered with too much when the original is already so close to perfection.
With this in mind, their classic eggs benny comes with generous lashings of homemade hollandaise, crusty toast and poached eggs.
Couple it with bacon and you have the customer favourite. There’s also the option of getting it with wilted spinach if the hollandaise has you feeling guilty. There’s a host of extras available so you can further customise your breakfast.
3. Hot Shott
LOCATION: 3/17 Tedder Ave, Main Beach
This Main Beach cafe’s eggs benny offering is titled the Benedict of all Benedicts and co-owner Jenna Finch says it’s with good reason.
“Our eggs benny is not served on the traditional bread or muffin, we fresh bake mini croissants every day. The hollandaise is made fresh by Kelly (Rolfe, co-owner and head chef). She says the secret is tarragon vinegar, which she infuses herself. Then you’ve got the usual ham and eggs, finished with grilled asparagus, roasted cherry tomatoes and feta.”
2. Sage Cafe
LOCATION: 5/20 Queensland Ave, Broadbeach
Sage manager Andy Dove says the best eggs benedict experience is a combination of food and friendliness.
“Our offering is the usual eggs benedict with poached eggs, spinach and hollandaise and four alternatives: bacon, smoked salmon, avocado or ham. To be honest I think people like what we do because we’re very flexible. People like things in different ways, whether they want the hollandaise on the side, spinach fresh or wilted, eggs done a different way. It’s all about customer care and accommodating for a variety of tastes.”
1. Bam Bam Bakehouse
LOCATION: 2519 Gold Coast Hwy, Mermaid Beach
Eggs benedict on a croissant, how didn’t we think of it earlier?
It’s so simple and it’s had Gold Coasters in a spin ever since Ursula and Ben Watts introduced it at their Mermaid Beach Bakehouse.
“Firstly, it all starts with our hand made croissants – they take three days for us to create. We use French flour, French butter and French equipment. We’re serious about our croissants! The ham off the bone is freshly cut by the chefs to order, topped with two perfectly poached free range eggs then smothered with our light, fluffy tarragon hollandaise.”
But it’s not just the croissant doing the heavy lifting. The hollandaise is just as much of a hero. “Fresh is best,” Ursula says. “Our passionate head chef Kym has it dialled. We use really fresh free range eggs, a good balance of acidity, well season and a splash of tabasco for even more flavour. Oh, and love, there’s so much love!”
