EPIC 24 HOURS IN SURFERS PARADISE
Emma, who works for Surfing Queensland in Burleigh, says she hooked the monster at a depth of 450 metres using tuna for bait.
“It took a lot of hard work, probably 25 minutes to bring it up. The arms were a bit sort the next day,” she says of her struggle to land this whopper.
Her boyfriend, who is the keener fisherman in the relationship, caught a bass groper too – but his weighed in at a comparatively paltry 9kg.
“It was my first time out deep-sea fishing,” Emma says.
“I think I have caught the bug.
“I always enjoy fishing whether I catch anything or not – but to catch this was amazing.”
Emma says they kept the fish and filleted it, giving the skins and scraps to a kid at the boat ramp, who fed them to the pelicans .
“We had a Kiwi guy come along and ask if he could have the skeleton – it still had meat on it – and feed the family,” she said. “I think he was making soup or something.”
Regardless, it was a day Emma will not forget in a hurry.
