SURFING prodigy Quincy ‘Flying Squirrel’ Symonds is about to have her face and name plastered across Australiasia after being named one of three official ambassadors in the rebranding of the Barbie doll.
After years of being sledged for not promoting a healthy body image, Barbie manufacturers are on a campaign to prove they encourage children to become whatever they want.
Representatives from the global company approached Quincy’s mother, Kim Symonds, for the young Snapper Rocks boardrider’s help.
“When they pitched the idea to us, we thought it fit really well with Quincy because Quincy doesn’t let anything confine her,” Mrs Symonds said.
“She has big ideas and she has big dreams and she doesn’t really let anyone tell her that she can’t. Particularly in the water people say ‘aren’t you too small for that’ or ‘isn’t this too big for you?’.
“Her immediate answer is ‘no’. The whole idea of you can be anything and you can do anything really fits quite well with Quincy.”
The Tweed girl, 8, has won the national Barton Lynch’s Blast Off grom comp three times in two different age categories since she was four and said it was her dream to surf on the World Surf League tour.
“I want to go into the WSL because you get to go to all these awesome surf breaks and have fun, travel the world,” she said.
“I think it’s cool that they’ve started to rebrand it (Barbie). You can do anything, you can be anything. Never give up, follow your dreams.”
Quincy and two other children will feature in videos online and television as part of the Barbie campaign.
