JACKO Neaves still remembers pulling his first mangrove jack out of Tallebudgera Creek when he was just three.
“We used to live there, that one was just 47 centimetres ... still pretty good,” he recalls.
Just before Christmas, Jacko, 13, pulled up another decent mangrove jack but he won’t share where he did it other than that it was somewhere on the Gold Coast.

“I’d rather not say — usually if I tell people, there will be millions of other people at that spot the next time.”
The Palm Beach-Currumbin State High Year 9 student will share the tools of his trade; a three-pound line, 1000 Shimano Aemos and NS Blackhole 2-4kg rod with a Berkley Gulp soft plastic lure.
At the time he was actually fishing for bream.
As for the 3.6kg mangrove jack, Jacko says: “It was the greatest but most heart-racing fight that I have ever had.
“At first I thought it was a trevally as it started running straight away but once we got it in closer and saw the red we knew it was a jack.
“Then he went straight down to the bottom and I was fighting him for another five minutes after that.”
Jacko loves his fishing and says he goes out most days, whenever he gets the chance.
