KIRRA point could play host to the final day of competition for the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro events as a monstrous cyclone swell looks to batter the Gold Coast.
Wave heights are expected to reach nearly 2.5 metres by Thursday as a potential Tropical Cyclone forms near the Solomon Islands and tracks South-West towards the Glitter Strip.
Coastalwatch chief forecaster Ben Macartney said the swell could bring “chaotic” conditions for the World Surf League Championship Tour events.
“There will be plenty of swell and it has the potential to be very exciting,” Mr Macartney said.
However, Mr Macartney said the swell will not mimic the run of big waves experienced in the wake of ex-TC Gita last month.
“It is unlikely to be the same as the previous cyclone. It won’t be exhibiting long period energy,” he said.
“It’s going to be a short, sharp swell with a higher frequency of waves that could rapidly taper off after Thursday.”
WSL commissioner Kieren Perrow said they will be looking at all options — Kirra included — for the upcoming week’s swell window.
“ There’s a significant pulse forecast this week that could present options for Kirra,” Mr Perrow said.
“ We’ll continue to monitor and make assessments each day. It has been excellent conditions and surfing so far.”
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Sam Campbell said the Gold Coast can expect strong winds as the potential Tropical Cyclone makes its way along the Queensland coastline.
“Most likely it will decrease from cyclone strength as it approaches the coastline, but still bringing big surf and unusually high tides by Wednesday evening,” Mr Campbell said.
“On Thursday we can expect very high winds.”
