Gold Coast grommet holding a surf-a-thon to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan

HE'S only 12-years-old but Southport grommet Angus Thomson won't let that stop him from reaching out to victims of the Philippines Typhoon Haiyan.

A SOUTHPORT grommet is campaigning to get as many surfers as he can to join a surf-a-thon in aid of Philippines typhoon victims this Sunday.

Angus Thomson, a 12-year-old TSS student, was so shocked when he saw the scenes of devastation on the television he knew he had to help.

"I just wanted to do something to support the families in the Philippines with nothing, so I figured combining surfing that people love and helping people could work," he said.

The surf-a-then will begin at 5.30am and go until 5.30pm at The Spit.

Angus said he was hoping surfers would come and donate $10 for each hour they surf.

"If enough people come and surf for a few hours each we could raise hundreds," he said.

Donations can be made through the Red Cross.
