GOLD Coast angler Andy Sparnon says he got stood up on a date he had planned on Saturday night.
So he decided to go out and pick up ... a bull shark.
And the 44-year-old managed to haul in this 2m beast during his first attempt targeting bull sharks at Runaway Bay.
BULL SHARK FISHING HOTSPOTS REVELLED BY LOCAL ANGLERS
“I was meant to go out on a date but she stood me up, so we thought we’d go on a fishing trip to mend my broken heart,” Mr Sparnon said.
“No one wanted to paddle the bait out (on a kayak), so I got in the kayak and paddled it out into the water.
“We were fishing off Howard St at Runaway Bay so it’s pretty much in the Broadwater.”
Mr Sparnon, fishing with mate Andy Penny, said it took about an hour before a shark took the bait.
“Within an hour my reel was screaming, it really broke the serenity,” Mr Sparnon said.
“I though: ‘Jesus, this is a big shark, this is the dream.”
And it turns out there’s plenty of fish in a sea with mate Andy hooking a similar-sized shark about 20 minutes after Mr Sparnon got his to shore.
“They were about 2m long, I didn’t want to lay down next to it because I’d already gotten an accidental gash on my hand,” he said.
“The rain is like a dinner bell for the sharks, the rainwater pushes a lot of baitfish downstream,” Mr Sparnon said.
