Pro surfers enjoy pumping swells

Surfers have finally seen some relief from a wave drought that has plagued the city for more than six months.

A strong groundswell generated by cyclonic conditions in northern Queensland boosted swell yesterday but surfers must get out there early this morning before pesky northerly winds kick in.

Coolangatta-based Surf photographer Juan Medina captured the action.

"It has been beautiful and glassy in the mornings. I've been getting up really early to get the perfect shots," he said.

"It is the first cyclone of the season so everyone is really pumped."

Mr Medina said Coolangatta had been overrun with professional surfers training for next month's Quiksilver Pro.

"Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson have been out every day and heaps of other pro surfers are using the swell to train for the Quiky Pro,'' he said.

"It gives them a chance to practise on the beaches and get a feel for the waves.

"The banks have improved heaps from last year so we are expecting this year's comp to be way better than last year."

Meanwhile, it's set to be a hot 32C day on the Gold Coast today with a little cloud also moving in.

Tomorrow is expected to be 32C with the chance of a thunderstorm in the Gold Coast hinterland in the early afternoon while Thursday is predicted to be 30C with isolated showers and the chance of more thunderstorms.

Yesterday: It's been a solid six month wave drought but surfers this morning flocked to the beaches to carve up the first decent swells of the year.

But get in quick, the good conditions are expected to disappear by tomorrow afternoon.

A strong groundswell generated by cyclonic conditions in northern Queensland have provided the Gold Coast with swells of up to 1.5m over the past five days, peaking today.

Pro surfers including Joel Parkinson, were among scores to hit the surf over the weekend.

Swell net forecaster Craig Brokensha said surfers enjoyed clean, pumping waves this morning but pesky northerly winds had chopped out the points heading into the afternoon.

"It has been the best surf the Gold Coast has seen in more than six months. It has been shocking so this will make a lot of people very happy," he said.

"It was beautiful this morning but the winds are spoiling it now, the open beaches are the way to go.

"You can still get a few good waves but it's a bit bumpy.

"Tomorrow is not looking that good for the points either, it will be more The Spit, South Stradbroke Island and the Tweed coast."

The swells are expected to drop dramatically tomorrow.

Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe said the days would warm up to peak on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Monday will see clear skies and chance of a shower in the afternoon," he said.

"It will be warm with low 30C temperatures and very humid the next two days.

"There is a low chance of thunderstorms Tuesday."

Mr Sharpe said the weather would be wetter from Wednesday onwards when storms are expected.

"There might be a storm Wednesday that will hit the hinterlands, but might not get to the Gold Coast," he said.

"There is a lingering chance of showers on Friday and Saturday."
