LOCALS say the toddler who tragically died after swimming at Currumbin Creek yesterday was allegedly unresponsive in the water for several minutes before being noticed.

A three-year-old Tongan boy was found unconscious near Pirate Park at Palm Beach about 1.40pm on Saturday.

He tragically died after being pulled from the water at an unpatrolled section of creek.

A man working at a stand-up paddle board business tried to resuscitate the boy before paramedics arrived.

They continued CPR in the ambulance on the way to Gold Coast University Hospital but he died a short time later.

Locals who were nearby at the time said the boy had allegedly been in the water for about 10 minutes before being noticed.

The drowning was just one of numerous water-related incidents lifesavers and paramedics had to deal with yesterday.

Lifesavers rescued more than 24 swimmers along the city’s coastline today.

Lifesavers are urging beachgoers to only swim on patrolled beaches and always between the red and yellow flags.

At Surfers Paradise beach six 18-year-old men were pulled to safety by lifesavers on a jet ski after they were caught in a rip while swimming outside the flags this afternoon.

Prior to that a 16-year-old boy also had to be rescued under the same circumstances and at the same beach.

At Palm Beach a 45-year-old woman, 13-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl had to be pulled from the water at separate times from outside the flags.

Surf lifesavers also rescued a man and woman in their mid-50s caught in a rip while swimming outside the flags at North Burleigh just before midday Saturday.

Another swimmer, a 48-year-old man, suffered a suspected spinal injury after being dumped by a wave at Burleigh Heads.

Earlier in the day, at Tallebudgera Creek, a nine-year-old girl was pulled from the water unconscious after suffering a seizure.

The young girl was given oxygen therapy and transported to Gold Coast University Hospital.

Lifesavers were also kept busy with numerous shark sightings at Southport beach and Palm Beach. The beaches were temporarily closed.
