A Gold Coast angler’s fishing trip has been interrupted by a “friendly” dugong who popped up beside the man’s boat on Saturday morning.
Real estate agent Murray Schmidt was trying to land a few flathead off Ephraim Island about 10.50am but frolicking sea life had other plans.
“I was trying to fish for some flathead and at first some dolphins came passing by,” Mr Schmidt said.
“So I moved to the southern sandbar off Ephraim Island and he (the dugong) literally came up to the side of the boat.

“He swam around it and had a look, did a u-turn and came back past again.
“I thought there’s no more flattys there, so I left,” he said with a laugh.
Mr Schmidt recorded the encounter on his phone and can be heard in the footage calling the dugong a “friendly bugger”.
He said he was trying to take a few days off work from a “mad run of sales” on the Coast.
