AWLQ turning surrendered pets away due to high volume over Christmas

THE Gold Coast’s Animal Welfare League shelter is being forced to tell owners wanting to surrender their pets that they’ll have to go on a waiting list. It comes as the organisation launches it’s ‘Empty the Shelters’ campaign.

PETS will now have to go on a waiting list to be rehomed over Christmas after the Animal Welfare League’s Gold Coast shelter announced it was too overcrowded to take on any more unwanted pets.

The AWLQ is struggling to squeeze in more surrendered pets over the busy holiday period because it has been inundated.

With limited space, it has been forced to reject ‘walk-in surrenders’.

“Without notice (pets) may not be able to be accommodated,” the AWLQ said in a post on Instagram today.

“Due to the volume of surrender requests, there is a waiting list in place.”

Pets owners are asked to fill out surrender forms online to get on the waiting list at www.awlqld.com.au/surrender-request.

It comes as the organisation launches its ‘Project Empty Shelter’ which aims to find all animals at the shelter a home for Christmas.

Dogs will be $80 and cats $30 during the two-day sale on December 9 and 10.
