Aussies push for official ‘Vegemite scale’ following abysmal cafe effort
“That is spread so thin it is for babies, tourists and the weak”

Let’s be real, you can’t get a more Aussie breakfast than Vegemite on toast.
It’s not something I’d ever order at a cafe, but some people do. In saying that, I don’t think this person ever will again, after sharing an effort being labelled embarrassing to social media.
However, now that more people have weighed in on the other side of the scale, it’s become clear we need some kind of long term solution.

“Don’t put it on the menu!”
A Sydney Reddit user has taken to the platform this week to expose a cafe’s poor attempt at Vegemite toast.
“Sigh. If you can't make it. Don't put it on the menu,” they wrote.
The toast at hand looks like sourdough (bad start, in my opinion). But, the real issue is the amount of Vegemite. If I had to estimate, about one third of the bread is covered in Vegemite, and not even the butter covers the entire thing, leaving the poster with a sad excuse for a breakfast which probably set them back $12.
“I’m reporting this to ASIO, Centrelink, and possibly even The Wiggles”
Many commenters shared puns like ‘Vegemaybe’ and ‘Vegelite’ to describe the abomination, but for the most part, people were just angry.
“What is this? Vegemite for ants?” said one person.
“I’m reporting this to ASIO, Centrelink, and possibly even The Wiggles,” said another.
“That is spread so thin it is for babies, tourists and the weak,” a third person said.

“Might be an unpopular opinion…”
However, while the majority were all aboard the hate train, others couldn’t see the issue at all - saying that this is actually how they’d prefer their Vegemite toast to come.
“Actually only needs more butter,” said one person.
“Might be an unpopular opinion but that looks fine to me, tasty even,” another agreed.
“Vegemite amount is perfect however could do with more butter, I don’t like to see white patches on my toast!!!” said a third.
Is there a solution?
As debate continues, it’s led people to wonder - is there a solution to this dilemma? And, for many, the answer is clear - a Vegemite scale.
“The amount of spread people put on their toast is a very personal thing, you need to tell them exactly how you want it,” one person said.
“We need a Vegemite spread rating, like steak. I always ask for a generous slather but cafes then interpret that as Nutella thickness,” another agreed.
Of course, you could just make it at home, or have cafes give their customers packets to spread it themselves. But, this option is something to think about. I’d like my Vegemite toast medium, please!
