THE poor behaviour of a Gold Coast surfer has been slammed as “unAustralian”.

The Bulletin yesterday reported an angry surfer allegedly grabbed a volunteer lifesaver by the arm after he was instructed to leave the area between the red and yellow flags at a Gold Coast beach.

Three surfers, two believed to be aged in their teens, were out the back of the patrolled Miami Beach about 4.45pm Sunday where they were seen to be surfing in between the flags.

Mayor Tom Tate yesterday took a hard line against the behaviour.

“There is zero tolerance towards our lifesavers,” he said. “It is about respect and anyone who is out there should not be near the swimmers.

“We have 52km of beach, don’t give them lip or try and threaten them. They are there as volunteers.

“It is really unAustralian to abuse volunteers.”

Gold Coast chief lifeguard Warren Young also slammed the surfers and called for calm.
