“Who would get a receipt printed?”
A simple act can expose the fact that you’re a Millennial or older, and it is asking for a paper receipt at a store.
This information was recently learned by one of my mates, who passed this information on, as a warning.
She learned this new and slightly unwanted information while she was at a Big W store. She instantly had to accept the new reality that, just like skinny jeans, paper receipts are now considered a sign that you’re old.
While printing her receipt, she overheard a conversation between two teenage girls at the next self-serve checkout. They were perplexed, wondering out loud why anyone would still need a physical receipt.
It makes sense.
Generation Z doesn’t have wallets or time for pieces of paper unless it is emailed to them; they certainly aren’t going to be walking around with a receipt.
Their debit cards are on their phones, and wallets and paper receipts are strictly old school now.
US Influencer Anastazia went viral for revealing in a TikTok that she doesn’t have a wallet.
“No wallet, just vibes,” she wrote.
The clip amassed over 500,000 views, and dozens of Gen Zers commented on how they wouldn’t shop somewhere if a business didn’t offer Apple Pay as an option.
“If they don’t accept Apple Pay, then it’s a sign I shouldn’t spend my money,” one wrote.
Gen Zers are cashless people in baggy pants. So why would they want to cart around paper receipts?
This is what is happening to Millennials now. They are going about their daily lives, and then bam, some young person tells them something that they do without thinking is actually a dead giveaway of their age.
In an Aussie Facebook group, women have been sharing the first time they felt old or realised they were doing something that young people would consider cringe-worthy.
Honestly, nothing is sacred, not even the way you wear socks.
“When I go shopping, I go to the shops I went to for years and stare at the fashions perplexed,” one woman wrote.
She then added that half jumpers and low jeans just baffle her.
“Why are there so many nets?” She asked.
Another shared that her younger sister informed her that the fact she wore ankle socks was a “dead giveaway” that she was a Millennial.
Someone else said that their love of sending GIFs via messages “screams Millennial” but she’s just embracing it.
One shared that she was called “cringe” for saying, “1, 2, 3, smile” before taking a group photo.
Another said that the fact that Crocs have become cool shows her age because she just can’t get on board with it.
Someone else shared the harrowing experience of explaining what a floppy disk was to her 22-year-old co-worker.
What has become abundantly clear is that Generation Z have a whole new rule book for how to live and look cool, and Millennials are scrambling to decode it.
