'A disgrace': Aussies outraged over price of 'national icon' at supermarkets

"Wait, that's in Australia? They're half the price in America and they're imported there!"

Aussies were taken aback when they noticed packs of Tim Tams are now being sold for $6 on supermarket shelves.

The staggering price of our national choccy bickie left the internet gobsmacked, with many claiming it's the latest victim of the 'shrinkflation' effect.

Many were left fuming that what was once a pantry staple in households around the country has now become a luxury item, leading to many declaring that they will no longer buy them anymore.

"Are they crazy?

An image was recently shared on Reddit's 'r/Shrinkflation' forum, showing that Tim Tams now cost $6.

"I remember when a double pack used to only be about $4.50," the poster reminisced.

Immediately, he was backed up by hundreds of people who also mourned the once-cheap snack.

"That's just un-Australian," said one.

"I saw that yesterday too at Woolworths and I was thinking are they crazy?'" another revealed.

"That's in Australia?" another forum member replied, "They're half that in Canada and they have to import them from Australia!"

"A disgrace"

Then one person claimed, "This country is f***ed," while another called it "petrol station prices."

Another shopper went further and said, "I remember when Tim Tams were $2.50," while someone else asked, "How can they think they can get away with this?"

Meanwhile, another angry user called the price hike "a disgrace" and said, "Like many other shrunken and quality-reduced products, I can live without them."

Then others compared the biscuit price to other supermarket treats that have also increased recently.

They asked, "Are the supermarkets aiming for $10 for Tim Tams, Red Rock Deli chips, and Cadbury chocolate bars?"

The price of Tim Tams is currently $6 at both Coles and Woolworths.

Others also shared instances where they've seen even more expensive packets of Tim Tams.

"I went to an IGA on the south NSW coast and they wanted $9.00 for a pack! 😂 It was so ridiculous I also laughed… $15.00 for the family pack," one said.

"They're selling for $7.20 at Metro Woolies," shared another.

But wait, there's a dupe!

Before you vow to give up your favourite 3 p.m. snack for good, a shopper has claimed to have found something even better than the original… for half the price.

Taking to Facebook, an ALDI customer told fellow fans that she had found a ‘dupe’ that gave Arnott’s a run for their money.

"Whoever likes Tim Tams, buy the ALDI version. They are heaps better," they said.

The product in question is the Belmont Biscuit Co. Just Divine Milk Chocolate Biscuits, which are priced at just $2.19 and contain 11 biscuits, equivalent to the amount in Tim Tams.

In the comment section, other shoppers in on the secret echoed the poster’s thoughts.

"Yeah, I love them more, too," agreed one.

"My kids refuse the Arnott's ones now they have tried the ALDI one," one mum revealed.

"100% agree! Same as the ALDI brand mint slice," a third ALDI-goer wrote.
