Jetstar staff boarded a “new era” at Gold Coast Airport on Thursday, stepping out with a fresh new look as the company’s boss hinted at the potential for international growth.
The “sleek” new uniform collection, designed by renowned Australian fashion designer Genevieve Smart of Ginger Smart, marks the low-cost carrier’s 20th anniversary.
Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully said the company was “keen for a change”.
“We felt it was time to signify that it’s a new era for Jetstar, lots of new aircraft coming, new people joining the business who are coming back after Covid, so it just felt like the right time,” she said.
The airline has also introduced its first next-generation Airbus A320neo, part of a major fleet upgrade aimed at providing greater efficiency and comfort on domestic routes starting next month.
As one of Jetstar’s busiest markets, the Gold Coast is already home to a major crew base, with pilots, cabin crew, and airport staff stationed locally.
“We’ve got one of our biggest crew bases in the Gold Coast … so for us it’s about continuing to invest in our people here but also in our growth,” she said.
While details remain under wraps, Ms Tully said the Gold Coast market was “healthy” and hinted at international growth on the horizon.
“We’ve got a number of domestic flights and we’re always assessing new options.
“There will be more growth for us out of the Gold Coast – I guess watch this space.
“There’s definitely plans … I can’t talk to them yet.”
The airline’s plans come amid ongoing scrutiny of Gold Coast Airport’s functionality as an international hub.
Previous reports have detailed the limited international flight options and frustrations over the airport’s capacity to meet the demands of a booming tourism region.
Little expense was spared in a $260m expansion at Gold Coast Airport however, several international services at the Airport have since been discontinued.
The expansion was part of a three-year project to double the airport’s terminal footprint to cater for an expected surge in demand ahead of the 2032 Olympics.
In September, it was announced that Jetstar will begin operating flights between the Gold Coast and Hamilton and Dunedin in New Zealand three times a week beginning in June 2025, marking the Gold Coast Airport’s sixth trans-Tasman route.
The airline also launched its biggest ‘Return For Free Sale’ of 2024 today at midday, ahead of Black Friday, with 12 hours of exclusive early access for Club Jetstar members.
“The investment in new aircraft and in new people joining Jetstar and today obviously a new uniform signifies we are in a really healthy position we want to keep unlocking travel for people,” Ms Tully said.
